General ItemAbout the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program
The Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program awards a Master of Arts in education (M.A.Ed.) in Counselor Education. This program is offered on our Roanoke campus. Counselors help individuals change their lives. They work in school and community settings to advocate for individuals, and advance social justice. Because our program is CACREP approved, the 600 hours of internship count toward the 4000 required hours in residency for Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) licensure. All of our Clinical Mental Health Counseling courses are aligned to meet all course requirements for LPC licensure regulations and the National Certified Counselor (NCC) exam. At the completion of their M.A.Ed. program, Clinical Mental Health graduates will have completed all of the educational requirements for licensure as a professional counselor in Virginia. After graduation, there is a residency period (typically 2-3 years) and an exam to become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).

The School Counseling Program awards a Master of Arts in Education (M.A.Ed.) in Counselor Education, and is offered on our Roanoke campus. Counselors help individuals change their lives. They work in school and community settings to advocate for individuals, and work to advance social justice. School Counseling is frequently among the top ten critical shortage teaching areas in Virginia. We understand that School Counselors are counselors who work in school settings. Thus, we incorporate the same courses for both School Counselors and Clinical Mental Health Counselors. Many of our students who complete the School Counselor program continue to earn their Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) licensure as well. At the completion of their M.A.Ed. program, School Counseling graduates will have completed all of the educational requirements for provisional licensure as a Professional School Counselor PK-12. After working for two years, graduates become fully licensed as school counselors.

The Virginia Tech Counselor Education Program prepares professional counselors, counselor educators, and leaders in the counseling field with a professional identity that incorporates the intentional use of strength-based approaches, reflective practice, innovative and evidence-based strategies, and ongoing research to support and enhance our schools and communities. The program serves students from the Commonwealth of Virginia, the country, and the world, at campuses in Blacksburg and Roanoke, Virginia. Our faculty and students recognize that we live in a dynamic pluralistic society, and we are dedicated to enriching the lives of children, adolescents, and adults in our schools and communities. Our Counselor Education program offers two master's degree tracks, one in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and one in School Counseling. Both master's programs are offered on our Roanoke campus. The doctoral program in Counseling Education and Supervision is offered on our Blacksburg campus, and prepares skilled counselors who conduct impactful research, practice, supervise, and teach.
