Instructional Design and Technology Program , home
Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) applies what is empirically understood about how humans learn and improve upon performance to the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of learning and performance support products, processes, and environments. IDT professionals understand and leverage technologies as both product (such as a Web-based course for distant learners or print-based job-aids for the workplace) and process (such as an iterative and formative approach to learner assessment). Instructional technologists practice their unique, multidisciplinary profession in a variety of settings including industry, preK-12 schools, higher education, and government. Graduates of our M.A.Ed. and Ed.S. programs find themselves applying their expertise in a variety of rewarding, professional venues; for example, as instructional designers, trainers, or performance consultants in industrial settings and as teachers or technology coordinators in preK-12. Graduates of our doctoral programs typically assume dynamic roles as faculty in higher education, advancing research in the field and preparing the next generation of instructional technologists for the profession.

Educational Leadership and Policy Studies
The Educational Leadership and Policy Studies doctoral program is available at multiple Virginia Tech campuses across Virginia. Designed for working professionals, the program is conducted on a part- or full-time basis, with coursework that balances modern theory with real-life practice. The vast majority of our doctoral students pursue the Ed.D., though a Ph.D. option is available. For over forty years, the Virginia Tech Educational Leadership Doctoral Program has prepared aspiring educational administrators throughout the Commonwealth. Ed.D. graduates leave with the skills they need to lead ethically; advance equity and social justice in educational settings; consider and implement educational policy; lead innovative practices; communicate with diverse constituents; and improve the learning and well-being of all PK-12 students. Approximately one-third of all School Superintendents in Virginia are graduates of the Virginia Tech program.

Elementary Education
The Elementary Education Program faculty offer doctoral degree programs in Curriculum and Instruction. These Ph.D. or Ed.D. programs can include emphasis/specialization in: (a) Elementary Education PK-6, (b) Reading/Literacy, and/or (c) Teacher Education. Students are prepared for teaching and research positions in academic environments such as colleges, universities, and school districts. The Elementary Education Doctoral Programs provide a context for graduate education that is focused on theory, research, practice, innovation, inquiry, and equity.

Integrative STEM Education
The Integrative STEM Education program at Virginia Tech offers a graduate certificate and degrees at three different levels: master of arts in education degree (M.A.Ed.), education specialist degree (Ed.S.), and doctoral degrees (Ph.D. or Ed.D.). Graduates of the Virginia Tech Integrative STEM Education program are among the most sought after professionals in higher education. Since the program’s inception, there has been a 100% post-secondary education placement rate for our doctoral graduates. Integrative STEM Education serves as the theoretical and pedagogical premise for technological/engineering (T/E) design based teaching and learning practices. The goal of T/E design based learning is distinct in that it seeks to promote integrative STEM thinking through the design of a product, system, or environment that provides solutions to practical problems. Technological/Engineering design embodies habits of both hand and mind that together afford the learner knowledge and understanding necessary for developing appropriate solutions to human wants and needs. The faculty works closely with students to tailor their learning experiences to meet their goals.

Expand your teaching career, based on a solid base of research and experience to teach at the secondary levels (grades 6-12) in Virginia with a master’s or educational specialist degree in Career & Technical Education from from Virginia Tech. We offer programs in Agricultural Education, Business and Information Technology Education, Family and Consumer Services Education, and Marketing Education. We also offer expanded PD CTE offerings to suit your needs. The Career & Technical Education Program prepares practical educators for 21st century classrooms and leads to initial licensure in Virginia.
