General ItemEducational Leadership and Policy Studies
The Educational Leadership and Policy Studies doctoral program is available at multiple Virginia Tech campuses across Virginia. Designed for working professionals, the program is conducted on a part- or full-time basis, with coursework that balances modern theory with real-life practice. The vast majority of our doctoral students pursue the Ed.D., though a Ph.D. option is available. For over forty years, the Virginia Tech Educational Leadership Doctoral Program has prepared aspiring educational administrators throughout the Commonwealth. Ed.D. graduates leave with the skills they need to lead ethically; advance equity and social justice in educational settings; consider and implement educational policy; lead innovative practices; communicate with diverse constituents; and improve the learning and well-being of all PK-12 students. Approximately one-third of all School Superintendents in Virginia are graduates of the Virginia Tech program.

General ItemInstructional Design and Technology (Ph.D.)
Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) applies what is empirically understood about how humans learn and improve upon performance to the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of learning and performance support products, processes, and environments. IDT professionals understand and leverage technologies as both product (such as a Web-based course for distant learners or print-based job-aids for the workplace) and process (such as an iterative and formative approach to learner assessment). Instructional technologists practice their unique, multidisciplinary profession in a variety of settings including industry, preK-12 schools, higher education, and government. Graduates of our doctoral programs typically assume dynamic roles as faculty in higher education, advancing research in the field and preparing the next generation of instructional technologists for the profession.

General ItemEducational Psychology
The Educational Psychology Program prepares educational psychologists for a variety of roles, such as professors and researchers. Educational psychologists apply psychological research and theories to educational settings. Educational psychology is a broad discipline that applies psychological research and theories to educational settings. Students in the educational psychology programs study learning, development, motivation, assessment, testing, and instructional design. Individualized programs of study are developed for students to ensure that their studies prepare them well for the career paths they choose. We emphasize understanding theory and research related to learning and motivation, as well as how to apply empirically-based principles to issues and problems that affect the design, delivery, and evaluation of educational programs in a variety of practical settings. We offer high student/professor interaction, opportunities for student scholarship and research, and a commitment to diversity and equity. The faculty works closely with students to tailor their learning experiences to meet their goals.

General ItemFoundations of Education
Students in the Foundations of Education Doctoral Program build individualized, interdisciplinary programs of study to help them address pressing issues in education at all levels, both locally and globally. Foundations of Education students acquire skills and tools from the humanities and social sciences—the philosophy, history, politics, and sociology of education—that enable critique and creative responses to educational challenges. We have special program focus on critical theory, rural education, literacy, social justice, equity, and inclusion. We emphasize applying research and theories to practice and policy. The program’s relatively small size allows for close interaction and collaboration between doctoral students and Virginia Tech's world class faculty.
