Creativity and Innovation Living-Learning Community Building

A distinguished guest of Virginia Tech’s Diverse Voices and Perspectives Lecture Series, Armand Hall, will present the lecture “Concert Design with the Audience in Mind." The lecture will focus on his scholarship around concert design based on the philosophy that concerts should be designed as engaging experiences for all involved. He will discuss this through the lens of intercultural competency from musician, conductor, and audience perspectives.

The concept of concert design as a tool to promote access will be explored as well. As director of programming at the Gateways Music Festival, a robust classical music organization that connects and supports professional classical musicians of African descent and enlightens and inspires communities through the power of performance, Hall is an expert in programming concert experiences that uplift underrepresented voices and inspire audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Hall has chosen to present this aspect of his scholarly exploration for the university-wide lecture because concerts are widely shared experiences among people from all disciplines and walks of life.

Additional events during Hall's residency:

  • A lecture for School of Performing Arts M.F.A. students to speak about the work around arts leadership in El Sistema-inspired and historically underserved community programs.  Sept. 9, 5:30-6:30 p.m., Henderson Hall Conference Room.
  • A workshop with pre-service music educators on culture-appropriate teaching and intercultural competence. Sept. 10, 7:10-8:10 p.m., CID LLC Multipurpose Library.

All events are free and open to the public.
