What you'll study
The Theatre program offers three different options for the student’s individual focus: theatre general, theatre design and technology, and theatre performance.
A degree in theatre provides the foundation for a fulfilling, imaginative, and ever evolving future career. By exploring each area of production over the course of your program, you can develop a wide range of skills and a full-scale appreciation of the theatrical art form.
A theatre degree is not just about learning, it's about doing! Our students are active participants in our shows. Between mainstage and workshop productions, there is no shortage of quality experiences to be gained.
You'll take 120 credit hours for a bachelor of arts degree, including Virginia Tech's Pathways.

Undergraduate students take an active involvement in both our mainstage and workshop productions, whether as a performer or within a wide range of production roles.
Hands-On Work
Design and performance classes give students the experience to practice hands-on work in a variety of areas within the realm of performance and design/technical theatre. Whether you’re interested in performance, directing, costumes, set building, sound, projections, painting, props, or lights, there are plenty of opportunities to pick up new skills.
Study Away
Learn more about London Calling, our study abroad opportunity with the English Department. You could live and study in London for a month and even intern overseas!

Careers and further study
Ale Rocha
Ale pursued a double major in theatre arts and industrial & systems engineering. With her goal of going into the themed entertainment industry, Ale joined the Theme Park Engineering and Design Club and completed an internship at Walt Disney World through the Disney College Program. Her courses in arts marketing, stage management, and stage & lighting technology will help her in her first professional role with Super 78, a theme entertainment attraction design studio as a production assistant.
Shannon Clarke
Shannon completed dual degrees in theatre arts with an emphasis in audio engineering and design and business management. She designed four mainstage shows and assistant designed four others. She developed skills including welding, light hangs, putting together sound designs, and many others. Shannon’s employer values those theatre skills along with her collaboration background for her work in supply chain management.
