The Digital Audio Recording and Production Studio, located immediately adjacent to campus in downtown Blacksburg, is a state-of-the-art facility for the Music Technology program. It is a 4,500 square-foot multi-room facility with nine acoustically isolated rooms of varying characteristics and a 1988 Yamaha CF III concert grand piano. The primary control room and classroom is designed to support instruction, multitrack recording, editing, and mixing, surround sound production, sound design, video editing, foley recording, and audio for post, and additional production rooms are available for overflow, multimedia/game development, and DVD production capabilities.

The facility employs high-quality microphones, including a variety of large and small diaphragm condenser, tube, and ribbon microphones from manufacturers such as DPA, Neumann, AKG, Earthworks, Soundfield, Royer, Peluso Labs, Shure, Audix, and Sennheiser. Our microphones are complimented by world-class Metric Halo ULN-8 microphone preamplifiers and A/D converters, a fully-automated Sony digital mixing console, Avid control surfaces, and variety of digital audio and video applications such as Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Sonic Studio Soundblade, Sonic Studio HD, Sound Particles, Final Cut Pro, and Davinci Resolve.

Processing and metering tools include Metric Halo hardware platforms, software plugins from iZotope, Metric Halo, Soundfield, Audioease, and Exponetial Audio, and visualization tools such as Spectrafoo Complete and Insight. The main studio employs a Genelec 8351 Smart Active Monitor system for stereo monitoring, a multichannel Genelec system for surround monitoring, and an Aviom A360 system for headphone distribution.  Additional production rooms provide Genelec and JBL studio monitors for stereo work as well as a variety of other software systems to support digital audio mixing and production, digital video editing, DVD-Video/DVD-Audio authoring, sound desgin, audio for cinema and post, and multimedia/gaming audio production.

Remote location recording capabilities include 48-channel multitrack recording, Canon and Sony cameras with a selection of lenses, Shogun and Sound Devices recording sytems, and two Soundfield B-Format and ambisonics recording systems for capturing three-dimensional, fully immersive acoustical events for reproduction into traditional stereo, multichannel, periphonic, and immersive audio environments.
