VT String Day is coming to NoVA!

Join us in Northern Virginia for VT String Day 2026 on February 7th. The event is free, but you should register by February 1st. This event is open to all 8th-12th grade violinists, violists, cellists, and bassists in VA, DC, and MD! Highlights include chamber orchestra reading sessions, technique classes, solo master classes, audition tips workshop, and All-Virginia Audition Material class (optional). All classes will be led by VT String Faculty. 

Please bring your instrument, a pencil, a water bottle, lots of enthusiasm, and All-Virginia excerpts (if applicable).

Event Schedule

  • 9-9:15 AM Student drop off, Check-in, Tuning (Auditorium)
  • 9:15-9:25 AM Welcome (Auditorium) 
  • 9:25-10:15 AM Chamber Orchestra Reading Session with Dr. Elmer, VT Philharmonic Conductor (Orchestra room) 
  • 10:25-11:25 AM Technique Class or Mock Auditions for All-Virginia (Prof. Wilkens-Reed, Viola, Dr. Irrera Violin, Prof. Weinstein, Cello/Bass, Dr. Elmer and Mrs. Albers Mock Auditions)
  • 11:30 AM-12 PM Lunch Break (bring a packed lunch from home) 
  • 12:05-12:55 PM Solo Master Classes with Prof. Wilkens-Reed, Viola, Dr. Irrera, Violin, and Prof. Weinstein, low strings 
  • 1-2 PM Leadership and musicianship training (Orchestra room). This session will cover leadership roles in orchestra, connecting conducting with playing, and cuing/following practice.
  • 2-2:10 PM Snack (provided) 
  • 2:10-2:50 PM Side-by-Side with the Faculty: Final Orchestra Reading Session, parents are invited to sit in (Orchestra room) 
  • 2:50-3 PM Student pickup
