Jazz Ensembles

A large jazz ensemble of nineteen young musicians poses onstage with their instruments, including trumpets, saxophones, trombones, electric guitars, and a bass. All are dressed in black performance attire, and they stand smiling in a semi-circle against a black curtain backdrop in a concert hall setting. A piano and music stands are visible behind them.
VT Jazz Ensembles

Students have the opportunity to participate in various ensembles, including the flagship Virginia Tech Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Lab Band and the Jazz Workshop, which provides small group performance opportunities, allowing students to develop their skills in jazz improvisation and communication.

Concerts are presented throughout the year both on and off campus, featuring guest artists such as Kurt Rosenwinkel, John D’earth, Byron Stripling, and Dick Oates. All ensembles and courses are open to students regardless of major, fostering a vibrant and inclusive community.

Students may also pursue a minor in Jazz Studies, in order to further develop their performance technique and study the history of jazz through concentrated courses.
