At Virginia Tech, motivated students are presented with the opportunity to pursue a double major in music. This course of study enriches an academic journey and cultivates the sort of interdisciplinary skill set that is highly valued by employers. With three distinct degree options supporting double majors—Performance (PFLA), Creative Technologies (CTLA), and Music Technology (MTLA)—students have the flexibility to tailor their education to suit their interests and career aspirations. Each program offers its own set of challenges and rewards, catering to a diverse range of talents and interests.

The Performance (PFLA) track provides an immersive experience in instrumental or vocal performance. PFLA students engage in applied lessons, ensemble performances, and rigorous coursework to hone their craft. Notably, PFLA is the only option that mandates the study of a voice or instrument, making it ideal for those with a strong background in classical music. Admission to the PFLA program is competitive, requiring prospective students to audition for acceptance.

Creative Technologies (CTLA) offers aspiring composers and researchers a dynamic platform to explore electronic music and its interdisciplinary applications. CTLA students delve into the realms of sound synthesis, digital composition, and audiovisual performance, fostering creativity through experimentation and innovation. Through a combination of studio work and theoretical study, CTLA cultivates a versatile skill set suited for contemporary music production and multimedia artistry.

Music Technology (MTLA) delves into the fusion of art and science, equipping students with the technical expertise needed for audio recording and production. MTLA encompasses a broad spectrum of topics, including sound engineering, acoustics, and production. By integrating theory with hands-on practice, MTLA empowers students to become proficient in the tools and techniques shaping the modern music industry.
