Music Double Major

banner

A double major in music at Virginia Tech allows students to continue developing their musical talents while pursuing a second academic passion. Whether your interests lie in performance, composition, or music production, our music programs provide opportunities for meaningful artistic growth alongside studies in engineering, business, sciences, humanities, and other disciplines. Designed with flexibility in mind, these degree options allow students to engage deeply with music through lessons, ensembles, creative projects, and specialized coursework while earning a degree that reflects their unique interests and goals.

The Performance (PFLA) track provides an immersive experience in instrumental or vocal performance. PFLA students engage in applied lessons, ensemble performances, and rigorous coursework to hone their craft. Notably, PFLA is the only option that mandates the study of a voice or instrument, making it ideal for those with a strong background in classical music. Admission to the PFLA program is competitive, requiring prospective students to audition for acceptance.

Music Production is a flexible and creative option for students who want to explore music, audio, and media while pursuing another major. With tracks in Recording and Composition, students can choose to focus on recording and producing music, audio for film and media, sound design, beat-making, songwriting, or composing for video games and interactive experiences. Through individual instruction, collaborative projects, and access to professional studios and production tools, students develop their creative voice while working alongside musicians, filmmakers, game developers, and other artists across campus. Because no instrumental or vocal audition is required, Music Production is an accessible pathway for students who want to remain deeply engaged in music while complementing studies in fields such as engineering, computer science, business, theatre, or the arts.

Music Composition is an excellent option for students who want to continue creating music while pursuing another academic passion. Students compose for ensembles, film, video games, and digital media while exploring a wide range of compositional techniques and technologies. Through individual lessons, collaborative projects, and a weekly seminar, composers develop their artistic voice, receive personalized mentorship from faculty, and work alongside musicians, filmmakers, game developers, theatre artists, and creative technologists from across campus. Whether paired with engineering, computer science, theatre, business, or another field, Composition offers a creative outlet and an opportunity to bring original ideas to life while remaining deeply engaged in music.
