Music Minors
Make music an essential part of your college experience. Virginia Tech’s music program offers four distinct music minors geared towards students from all disciplines. This curriculum allows students to delve into musical study, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and cultural appreciation. Minor options
This minor offers students the opportunity to explore a broad spectrum of music courses without the requirement of applied study or ensemble participation. By engaging a curriculum focused on music theory, history, and culture music minors gain a greater understanding of how music shapes the world around us.
The Applied Music Minor offers an exciting and immersive course of study tailored for students passionate about honing their skills as performers. While this curriculum does include courses in music history and theory, students will spend the bulk of their time focused on instrumental or vocal performance via applied lessons and ensembles. Students that complete the requirements for this minor may give an optional 30-minute recital. Minor in Music Production, Technology, and Composition offers students a multifaceted exploration of the art and science of music creation. With three distinct tracks focusing on recording and production, creative technology, and composition, this program provides a dynamic and immersive learning experience. Through hands-on coursework, studio experiences, and mentorship from accomplished faculty, students are empowered to unleash their creativity, push the boundaries of musical expression, and embark on a journey of artistic discovery and innovation. Whether aspiring to become recording engineers, electronic music producers, or composers, the Music Production, Technology, and Composition minor at Virginia Tech offers a rich and rewarding pathway for students passionate about music and technology.
The Minor in Jazz Studies immerses students in culture and performance practice of jazz. With a curriculum designed to cultivate both artistic excellence and scholarly inquiry, this program offers a diverse array of courses covering improvisation, jazz history, arts leadership, and ensemble performance. Through hands-on instruction and faculty mentorship, students develop their improvisational skills, deepen their understanding of jazz's rich cultural heritage, and explore the intersections of music and leadership within the arts industry.
