Music Performance
Your Career Starts Here
Performance Professional Options
Do you dream of performing at Carnegie Hall? Have you considered conducting a show on Broadway starring Daniel Radcliffe and Jonathan Groff? Have you ever wanted to participate in a prestigious summer program like the Aspen Music Festival? Students with performance degrees from Virginia Tech have done all of the above, and more. Virginia Tech performance majors receive excellent teaching from world-class faculty, and are given many performance opportunities that help to prepare them for diverse careers in music. Students who wish to continue on to graduate school have applied for and been accepted to programs at the Eastman School of Music, New England Conservatory, and Indiana University, among others.
Our music program at Virginia Tech is undergraduate-only; you will never study with a TA or a grad student. As an undergraduate here, you will have opportunities to shine, be it as a competitor in our annual concerto competition, performing solos as part of our excellent ensembles, or taking advantage of any of our other 100+ performances that occur throughout the year. Our curriculum provides individually-tailored programs that allow students to explore their specific interests. In addition to the traditional performance training, students can explore the intersection of technology and the arts, and participate in national-level performance opportunities.
All Music Performance applicants must complete an audition, either live (preferred) or pre-recorded (via YouTube). Information on auditions can be found HERE.
A Close Community at a Big School
We are a small program operating within a huge university. Virginia Tech’s broad curriculum ensures that students have the opportunity to study in areas beyond their major. Always encouraging innovation, students can participate in transdisciplinary programs, projects, and undergraduate research. If you are interested in double majoring, we can make that happen.
At Virginia Tech, you are part of a community. Our faculty will push you to succeed, facilitate your learning, and advocate for you throughout your careers. Your peers will work hard alongside you, support you, and ultimately be the colleagues you can depend on after you have graduated.
