Amy Cowan

Amy Cowan holds a BM degree in Vocal Performance from Rice University in Houston, and an MM degree in Opera Performance from the Longy Conservatory in Cambridge, MA. She also trained at OperaWorks, Bay Area Summer Opera Theatre Intensive, and Key West Symphony's Solfest. She sang the role of First Spirit in Houston Grand Opera's production of The Magic Flute and has been a featured soloist with the Victoria Bach Festival, Houston's Mercury Baroque, Harvard Early Music, and most recently with Roanoke's Kandinsky Trio. While living in the California Bay Area, Amy's favorite roles were leads in Nunsense, South Pacific, The Sound of Music, and Gilbert and Sullivan's Patience. In 2008, she earned a Certification in Kodaly Methodology from Holy Names University in Oakland. Positions held include Interim Music Director for Blacksburg Presbyterian, Music Director for Coastside Lutheran Church and Coastal Theatre Conservatory, Choir Director for Vivace Youth Chorus of San Jose's Intermediate Chorus and pre-school Rising Notes class, as well as Music Instructor for several elementary schools. She has adjudicated children's choral festivals in Oakland, Houston, and Key West and has coached many musical theatre productions for high school, community, and K-8 programs. In addition to her work at Tech, Amy has long-maintained a private voice studio and is a mother of two. Her choral experience and extensive work with young voices make her a particularly good fit for Music Ed majors. She is also a devoted practitioner of Pilates and Yoga, and enjoys bringing this whole-body approach to her work with singers.
