General ItemAbout the English Education Teacher Preparation Program
Virginia Tech's English Education Teacher Licensure Preparation Program melds traditional issues of teaching writing, language and literature with newly emerging practices and research in adolescent literacy, new literacies, multimodal technologies, teaching, and learning in 21st century classrooms. The English Education Programs at Virginia Tech prepare English teachers, teacher educators, and scholars to be successful in the context of increasingly standardized education reforms. Working from the perspective that learning should be a generative act, faculty guide students in the exploration of concepts that make student-centered, dialogic approaches central constructs in the study of teaching and learning. Courses in the program focus on literacy development and consider the roles of language and culture in approaches to teaching that bring classroom content into dialogue with students’ lives in 21st century classrooms.

General ItemAbout the Counselor Education and Supervision Doctoral Program
The CACREP accredited Counselor Education and Supervision Ph.D. Program helps excellent counselors shape the future of the counseling profession through teaching, supervision, advocacy, and research. Our program strongly endorses the researcher-practitioner model. Our students receive a strong foundation in research methods that help them to design and conduct research that can be translated into practice. Counselor Educators and Supervisors are those skilled counselors who supervise, advocate, and teach. Counselor educators support the development of counseling students through direct instruction, as faculty in colleges and universities, and also through the supervision of the work of students and new professionals. Those are central components of ensuring high quality clinical work and protecting the clients who are served by counselors. Counselor educators are also advocates who help to shape the counseling profession, and address issues of injustice and inequity in our schools and communities. Our students have rich and rewarding experiences working in the classroom side-by-side with program faculty, and through teaching and supervising counselors in training.

General ItemClinical Mental Health Counseling
The Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program awards a Master of Arts in education (M.A.Ed.) in Counselor Education. This program is offered on our Roanoke campus. Counselors help individuals change their lives. They work in school and community settings to advocate for individuals, and advance social justice. Because our program is CACREP approved, the 600 hours of internship count toward the 4000 required hours in residency for Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) licensure. All of our Clinical Mental Health Counseling courses are aligned to meet all course requirements for LPC licensure regulations and the National Certified Counselor (NCC) exam. At the completion of their M.A.Ed. program, Clinical Mental Health graduates will have completed all of the educational requirements for licensure as a professional counselor in Virginia. After graduation, there is a residency period (typically 2-3 years) and an exam to become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).
